There was a vacation: Seattle trip and Sasquan report

The flight into Seattle was gorgeous: mountains with snow tops poking through the clouds, the nickname-worthy emerald green of the city. When the plane landed on Wednesday in pouring rain despite the promised clear skies I was worried, but by the time we made our way out of the airport and to the AirBnB in Freemont, the weather cleared up. Verdict on AirBnB: given the price... For one, in hotels you expect tubs with water that drains reasonable promptness. There was a reference to available parking, but the spot that was supposed to be "ours" was occupied. (Luckily, despite the ubiquitous towing notices, the eventual rental car had spent the night in someone else's random spot with no problem). The first stop was the boat tour. We got a Citipass, but decided to upgrade from the included harbor tour to a locks tour. We had salmon and cod, which were tasty, and the seating area was full of seagulls crowding around and waiting for tourists to throw them french fries. The locks cruise goes either from the harbor through the Puget Sound to Union Lake or back, with the bus completing the loop. Ours started on the lake. The tour guide was not terribly articulate but seemed to know her stuff. I always love being on the water, so it made for a fantastic first impression. Next, we took in the underground tour, which came in two options - family-friendly (and therefore low on cussing, prostitution and opium dens) and adult. We opted for the former, which was the next one, but also to me the interesting part is the history and the mechanics of the underground, rather than the salacious elements. The tour guide recommended Von's for dinner. It bragged bread and pasta made from their own well-historied sourdough starter and a tremendous drinks list. I had something like a grapefruit cosmo sweetened with cotton candy (a bit too sweet but Spouse liked it) and he a gimlet made of house alcohol (a bit sour so I loved it), and we both had pasta dishes involving seafood. It turned out all dishes have undocumented hotness because the chef likes it that way, so they remade mine. On Thursday I got a sore throat and sniffles, which proceeded to develop into a full-blown cold, which I have mostly gotten over now. Anyway, we walked out to the convenient bus stop, and spent the next 45 minutes waiting for a bus that wouldn't come. eventually we gave up and walked about Freemont, where nothing was open yet, but most of the interesting elements were outdoors anyway. (I had vast sympathy for the "waiting for the interurban" sculpture. As we were walking across the Freemont bridge they had to open it to let a boat in, making it the niftiest of inconveniences. We then proceeded to do all the rest of the Citipass attractions, starting with the Needle. It's mostly an item to check off because you've gotta, but a few of the views were pretty cool, particularly looking down at adjacent structures. Such as the EMP museum, which is a really cool building containing some really cheesy exhibits on fantasy and SF and horror, an extra-fee Star Wars costume exhibit which we decided to skip, some music and gaming stuff that was rather lost on me,... It didn't take us long at all, and we rode the monorail down to the water to meander the Market, where as advertised fish was flung. Lines for the first Starbucks were such that the coffee-drinking Spouse took one look at them and suggested moving on. Citipass also included the aquarium, which was a bit small, and does not make my top 5, but was cute enough. We monorailed back to City Center, and revisited another museum which Citipass included, which we'd gone to earlier, and enjoyed so much that we decided it was worth returning to at dusk. The Chihuly glass museum is stunning. The glass is gorgeous, the lighting is gorgeous, and that's just the indoor part of it. And then there is the garden, where glass sculptures are alien-plant-like, growing out of exuberant flowerbeds, art blending and contrasting with nature.
